The carbon calculator within the journey planner uses two primary sources of information; distance travelled, and the mode of transport used. By using the expected distance for the desired journey and multiplying this by an emission factor (which is a carbon impact per km/mile), we get an estimate of the expected carbon impact of that journey per mode of transport.

The emission factors come from the latest conversion factors provided by the UK Government’s Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.
